FINE ARTS COLLEGE SHANGHAI: RED RING

We collaborated with Perkins & Will back in April 2021 in this huge project which convert an 860m long old steel factory into an Art School Campus with 220.0000m2 of Art School Program.
The project is placed in one of the 5 key transformation areas of Shanghai, Baoshan District. This transformation attempts to renew the steel industrial base into an international culture, art and fashion meeting point.
The old factory building is mainly made of steel structure and brick/concrete. This structure communicates a strong sense of volume which should be preserved as this strong spatial sequences has a unique industrial beauty.
So classrooms, labs, studios, exhibition rooms, etc should be accommodated under this monolithic volume, as little pieces interacting in between them giving that sense of open space and flexibility we have tried to represent in all views.
The whole set showed exterior shots where the industrial look was the main focus, and interior views where the previous paragraph should be visually expressed.
Keeping in mind this huge installation was conceived to be a place to represent, build, and create art installations and performances, the team came out with this alternative view of a flooded colorful art scene. We felt in love the moment we saw it as somehow it felt extremely representative of the nature of the building.
